Collaborative project with Antonín Gazda for Artmat, placed in Signalspace.
We designed an object that carries the feeling of closeness and familiarity people experience when meeting around a firepit. In simple terms, it is a 3D-printed lighter case with a built-in speaker.
The project started with collecting data from a real firepit. We recorded temperature, audio, and video over time. Then we assembled the internal hardware, and I modeled the outer shell, which was then 3D printed.
The collection is limited to 50 pieces, and each object is unique. The level of distortion in the shell geometry is driven by the recorded temperature at an exact time. The temperature, audio, and video recording were divided into 50 sequences, so every object carries a different fragment of the aproximate 2 hours we kep up the fire.
Each piece contains a speaker that plays the audio of the fire from its corresponding time segment, as well as an NFC tag with a link to a website with a 10-second video snippet recorded at that same moment. Together, these elements allow the user to sense warmth by holding the lighter, hear the fire, perceive temperature through the distorted surface of the shell, and see the moment through video.
The idea is if the 50 people met and put together their lighters, they could see the whole process from the making of the fire to it burning out.
Its still in process since we got stuck on printing the shells and perfecting the design and functionality.
